What is Aethoxysklerol?

Aethoxysklerol is a sterile solution which is injected into the varicose veins to close the affected vein and to shrink the vessel(s).

How does Aethoxysklerol work?

The enlarged or varicose veins have a high potential for causing deep vein thrombosis. This consequence of varicose veins can be fatal. The less fatal but threatening effect of varicose veins is the damage they can cause to the tiny valves present in the veins of the leg. Aethoxysklerol causes the lining of blood vessel and is injected into the same to break up and at the equal time it stops the blood flow. The affected or target area is then squeezed by with the help of a compression bandage which directly closes that particular vein and also it allows your body to form a fibrous or stringy scar.

Aethoxysklerol Dosage and Administration:

Aethoxysklerol is administered by injecting the solution into the varicose vein and should always be inoculated by a doctor who has specially been trained in the appropriate methods for injecting varicose veins. The size of the varicose vein decides the exact dosage and variety of the Aethoxysklerol injection dilution.

Prior to injecting the medication, the leg must be lifted to a horizontal position or preferably lifted 30-45 degrees above the horizontal. A rigid compression bandage is applied after inoculation, covering the injection site. It’s necessary because injection of Aethoxysklerol would cause swelling of the limbs and high pressure when the limb is in a dependant position (in standing or sitting). Hence, the patient usually has skin complaints and an urge to scratch the areas affected producing ulcers in the skin. Soon after mounting the bandage, the patient is asked to walk for 30 minutes in the surgery room.

Once the injection site has been covered, a firm compression bandage will be applied. Immediately after fitting of the bandage, you will be asked to walk for 30 minutes in the surgery. Depending on the size of varicose veins treated, the duration bandage to be worn could range form several days to weeks. It is pertinent to mention here that the success of varicose vein treatment is dependent on the methodical and cautious follow-up compression treatment. For very small vessels a period of 2-7 days is usually sufficient but one or two repeat treatments may be necessary.

For larger varicose veins, longer compression-treatment with bandages is recommended. The bandage may need to be worn for 4-6 weeks or for extensive varicose veins, several months’ compression treatment with short traction bandages may be required.

Several repeat treatments at intervals of 1-2 weeks may be necessary, depending on the severity and extent of the varicose veins.

If Aethoxysklerol given are too much:

It is unlikely that you will be given too much Aethoxysklerol. Extensive varicose veins will always be treated in several sessions. If there is any likelihood of a hypersensitivity (allergic-type) reaction, only one injection will be given. Depending on the outcome and size of the area to be treated, several injections may be given at subsequent treatment sessions.
